Market Place

Local availability of Appalachian mountain dulcimers and accessories is pretty limited in Bellingham and Whatcom County.  However, potential sources do exist:
  • From time to time, Club members want to offer their dulcimers and/or dulcimer-related items for sale.  When such items become available, they will be listed here.
  • Sweetwater Music was established by Club member Tina Palmer.  She is the local sales representative for McSpadden Dulcimers out of Mountain View, AR.  She  maintains a limited inventory of their dulcimers as well as books and accessories.   E-mail Tina at sweetwatermusicdulcimers@yahoo.com for more information.
  • Checkmate Music is managed by David Payne.  This local shop, at 3201 Northwest Ave #4 (360-778-2796) is the source of dulcimer repairs and accessories.  Currently available are strings, electronic tuners, strap buttons, straps and the John Mueller dulcimer pictured below.  For more information, post David at david.checkmatemusic@gmail.com or visit facebook.com/checkmatemusic
  • Club member Dick Wightman has decided to offer several of his instruments for sale, shown in order of descending price.  For actual pricing of each of these instruments, contact Dick directly at <rwightman@mindspring.com>.

This 4-string dulcimer was built by well known luthier Warren May.

This instrument was built by J. Mozken.  It is diatonic (i.e., no "extra frets), has 5-strings and is the 884th dulcimer built by this luthier.

The builder of this diatonic dulcimer is unknown, but it would be a good "starter" instrument.
  • Club member Cindy Friedman says, "Want to learn how to play the guitar?  Then call me at 360-510-2177 for fun and individualized lessons."
  • Club member Linda Darks has an Appalachian mountain dulcimer up for sale.  It's a Black Mountain Instruments Model 58 (http://www.blackmtninstruments.com/). Comes with a padded case, extra strings, picks and an instruction book/DVD.  For more information, post her at wanna_sing@yahoo.com.
  • Here's an interesting dulcimer that is for sale here in Bellingham. It was built in 1964 (#496) and is signed by the luthier, J.W. Jeffries, Jr.(d.1992) of Stanton, VA.  It has wooden tuning pegs, 3-strings and no extra frets.  For more information, contact Anne Wicknick at wickfaca@comcast.net.
